Estimate vs. Quote vs. Proposal: What Homeowners Should Compare

The document title alone does not tell you how complete or binding it is. Read the actual scope, price basis, assumptions, exclusions, timing, and terms.

An estimate may be preliminary

Some estimates are rough planning numbers; others are detailed. Look for language describing uncertainty, allowances, expiration, and what remains to be finalized.

A quote or proposal can still have gaps

A fixed-looking total is not enough if important materials, responsibilities, or exclusions are vague.

The final contract matters

Whatever you relied on during bid comparison should be reflected in the final agreement or incorporated documents before work begins.

Use the decision as the starting baseline

When you choose a contractor, preserve the accepted scope, price, allowances, and payment milestones. CheckMyBids is the pre-hire side of the workflow; CheckMyRemodel is where the awarded project continues when changes and payments start.
